Newcastle Castle Coaster
Newcastle Castle
The Castle Keep, a formidable medieval fortress overlooking the River Tyne and famous for being the origin story of the city of Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Castle Keep & Black Gate were recently rebranded to be known as Newcastle Castle, as part of an initiative to attract more visitors to, and share the fabulously rich history of, Old Newcastle.
A Brief History
Formerly known as Monkchester during the Anglo-Saxon age, the city was renamed after the "new castle" built in 1080 by Robert Curthose (the eldest son of William the Conqueror).
This "New Castle Upon Tyne" was built on the site of the previous Roman fort known as "Pons Aelius" (Bridge of Hadrian) built in the 2nd century around 122 AD to guard the first ever bridge over the River Tyne, and the only known bridge in the world to be named after an emperor outside of Rome.
The fort was abandoned around 400 AD when the Romans vacated Britain, and later built on by the Anglo-Saxons, before Robert Curthose built his wooden motte and bailey in 1080 that gave it's name to the city of Newcastle upon Tyne we know and love today.
King Henry II built the stone castle keep on the site of the New Castle in 1177 and King Henry III added the black gate in 1247. Both of which still stand proud today in the heart of the city centre and are open to visitors who are able to explore the inside and climb to the rooftop of the castle keep for spectacular views of the city and quayside.
Nothing remains of the previous Roman fort or Curthose's castle, which is why we chose to use the date of when the current castle keep was built on our design.
