Newbiggin Bandstand Coaster

Newbiggin Bandstand Coaster

The Bandstand, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland

The traditional steel bandstand has been a feature of Newbiggin since the 1930's, where the brass bands of Newbiggin have played their music for the village throughout the decades, with many notable and nationally acclaimed players amongst them. Music has always been an important part of the town's heritage and culture, and musicians still play here at the bandstand today.

Newbiggin was primarily known as a fishing village until the sinking of a colliery in 1908 which opened in 1910. Following the opening of the new coal mine, the Newbiggin Colliery Band was formed in 1913, who were known affectionately as "Wor Band" by the locals and performed at the bandstand regularly. Additionally, the Salvation Army Corps Brass Band was formed in 1916 and still continues to make music and nurture young talent today.

The promenade, bandstand, and several shelters along the length of the bay were built between 1929 and 1932.  A storm in 1984 destroyed parts of the original promenade and since then a lot of effort has been made to restore the promenade and regenerate the town. The bandstand was refurbished in 2011 as part of a town centre refurbishment scheme and was repainted by the Town Council in 2018.
