A Brief Description
Chinatown Newcastle is one of only 5 Chinatowns in the UK. The very vibrant and beautifully decorated Chinese Arch was built 2004 - 2005, and stands 11m tall at the northernmost entrance to Chinatown facing St. James's Park football stadium. The arch was designed by craftsmen from the Changsu Classical Garden Construction Company of the Jiangsu Province in China.
The first business to open on Stowell Street (Chinatown) was a Chinese supermarket which moved there from Westgate Road in 1978, this would be the foundation from which the district would grow and development into the Chinatown we know and love today, as it was shortly followed by many more businesses owned by the Chinese community. In 1988 the businesses on Stowell Street were allowed to have signs in Chinese as well as English and in 2008 the street lights were replaced by Chinese-style lanterns
